Turley Birmingham is 20 in 20

2020 marks our 20th anniversary in Birmingham. Head of Planning Midlands, Angela Reeve, along with her predecessors Mat Jones and Mike Best, reflect on a year to celebrate and two decades of commitment to the city.

Mat Jones

“2019 was another year of good growth for us in Birmingham, delivering significant projects including Peddimore employment park, one of the largest planning permissions in the UK; Sandwell Aquatics Centre; the first phase of Port Loop, for Urban Splash; One Eastside, a 51 storey residential tower in Birmingham city centre; St Paul's Quarter, a complex residential led scheme in the heart of the Jewellery Quarter; and the refurbishment and extension of the former Rackhams building on Corporation Street.

Already in 2020, we have secured approval at Planning Committee for Martineau Galleries, on the doorstep of the HS2 Curzon station, and are working on the next phase of Paradise, Enterprise Wharf at Aston Science Park, and the transformational plans for the estate around the Custard Factory in Digbeth (including a ‘Skypark’). Across the wider Midlands, we are promoting around 30,000 homes through local plan reviews, all part of a strong pipeline of projects from a diverse range of high calibre clients. It is particularly pleasing that most of our major projects in the region also involve many of our other services."

Mike Best

“We look back with pride at our legacy of 20 years, and the contribution we’ve made as a business to the city and wider region. From our first major project at Fort Dunlop to Edgbaston Cricket Ground, where we celebrated our 10th birthday, to the award-winning Green Heart at the University of Birmingham, we have made our mark. For 15 years, we’ve supported the education of our future planners, held positions in various city and regional organisations, raised money for local charities and several team members have done volunteer work overseas in Sierra Leone and the Dominican Republic with our Charitable Trust.”

Angela Reeve

“It’s a privilege to be leading the Midlands Planning team into our 20th anniversary year, building on the great foundations laid by Mike and Mat. For me, it’s all about commitment – to supporting our people, to serving our clients, and to making a difference to society. It’s great to look back at what we’ve achieved but our focus is firmly on the future. This is a fantastic time to be working on high profile projects in the city, and playing our part in supporting the continued regeneration and investment that has been delivered over the last two decades. But we face many challenges in the 2020s – how to deliver inclusive growth and show that development can contribute to economic and social wellbeing; as well as environmentally positive outcomes for the built environment. With our Birmingham-based Sustainability team, we want to be at the forefront of the industry’s response to climate change and the need for decarbonisation.”

We are marking our 20th anniversary in twenty different ways during the course of the year, from events to stories about our people and projects, to research led pieces. Stay tuned for more information.
