Delivering a new state-of-the-art bus interchange for Stockport with public park above and new residential block
Our role
- Our Planning team was brought on board by Willmott Dixon following permission first being granted in 2019 to assist in delivering Transport for Greater Manchester’s recently opened project, which comprised the demolition and redevelopment of Stockport’s main bus interchange, in addition to a public park above and adjoining residential tower block.
- This involved working on discharging a complex set of conditions across various consents and phases which required a clear strategy and careful time management.
- We secured consent for a landmark cycle / pedestrian link which connects ‘Viaduct Park’ to the public realm below, oversailing the River Mersey.
- We secured full detail for the bridge line between the park and Station Road which was initially only secured in outline form.
- We also successfully secured a number of variations / amendments to the various consents relating to the development which arose as the build out progressed.
- Our Heritage team provided services given the historic context of the site including the Grade II listed Wellington Bridge which lies within the site boundary.
Results
- We established an excellent working relationship with the key case officer at Stockport and sought to engage at pre-application stage in order to mitigate risk upon submission and ensure positive decisions.
- The complexity of the scheme and associated consents required specialist planning advice and ultimately the inputs of a number of co-owners.
- The scheme, now built, has been lauded by local political leaders and has transformed the area between Stockport town centre and railway station with excellent transportation facilities, a new public park a top of the interchange building and an innovative approach to improving pedestrian and cyclist links.
