Plans approved for new sustainable urban neighbourhood at Goods Station

Turley has been advising Vita Group on its vision for a new sustainable urban neighbourhood on the former Axis site on Holliday Street in Birmingham, which has now received planning permission from Birmingham City Council.

The high-quality regeneration project known as ‘Goods Station’ will deliver five new buildings around a new landscaped square, including 990 well-designed homes across three buildings, 720 student bedrooms, a hotel/serviced apartment building with 278 bedrooms and a publicly accessible food hall for independent food retailers.

On behalf of Vita Group, we provided expert Planning, Strategic Communications, EIA, Heritage and Townscape, Economics and Sustainability services in support of this transformative regeneration project.

Goods Station will become a welcoming gateway between Westside and the city centre core, significantly improving accessibility and creating a new route for pedestrians from New Street Station to the theatres, bars and restaurants of Centenary Square, Broad Street and Brindley Place.

Director, Planning, Diane Bowers, said:

“We are proud to have supported Vita Group in achieving planning permission for this significant development. Good Station represents a landmark regeneration opportunity  in Birmingham that will deliver lasting value to the city. Having advised across several areas of our expertise, the full team at Turley looks forward seeing this sustainable neighbourhood come to life, bringing much-needed homes, new public realm and substantial social and economic benefits to this part of the city.”

Jon Weston, Development Director at Vita Group said:

“We are delighted with the decision to approve our application for a highly prominent city-centre site that has been vacant since 2021.

“Over the past two years, we’ve worked closely with Birmingham City Council and engaged extensively with the local community on a scheme that will become a landmark destination for Birmingham.

“Goods Station will transform a brownfield site into a 21st century sustainable urban neighbourhood, creating hundreds of new homes, a public food hall and an urban square for Birmingham’s residents and visitors to enjoy all year round.

“Building on our strong track record of delivering and operating high quality schemes in the city including Pebble Mill in Edgbaston, we look forward to delivering another exemplary, sustainable development in the city.”

The delivery of these proposals will also provide a significant economic boost to Birmingham’s economy. In its construction phase alone, the regeneration of the site is expected to create circa 485 jobs in the West Midlands and will contribute circa £245M to the local economy.

Once complete, the Goods Station will continue to benefit the city, creating around 185 jobs on-site, generating £2.4M additional council tax for the city and adding circa £7.8M Birmingham’s economy each year.
