Planning application submitted for purpose-built student accommodation on Charles St, Manchester

On behalf of Manchester-based developer, Jadebricks, Turley has submitted a planning application for high-quality, purpose-built student accommodation to breathe new life into an underutilised site on Charles Street, Manchester.

Designed by SimpsonHaugh, the proposals for the currently vacant brownfield site include 107 studio bedrooms over 15-storeys, which will complement the current vibrant mix of uses within this part of the city centre. We are providing expert Planning, Strategic Communications, Economics, EIA and Heritage and Townscape services for the development, which is located within the Oxford Road Corridor and within walking distance of Manchester’s universities.

Development of the brownfield gap site will complete the street scene and contribute to the surrounding area. The scheme has been designed to meet BREEAM ‘Excellent’ and promote the health and wellbeing of student residents.

Ahead of the application submission, the project team carried out extensive engagement with local stakeholders to inform the design development process. Speaking about the submission, Stephen Bell, Chief Executive said:

“Demand for well-managed, high-quality student accommodation in Manchester far outstrips supply, and so, we’re delighted to have submitted the application for Charles Street which will address a long-standing need in the city. Not only does dedicated student accommodation enhance the student experience, providing opportunities for community and social interaction, it also eases the pressure on local housing across Manchester.”

Jadebricks Managing Director, Mike Bathurst added:

“Jadebricks are delighted to be able to bring forward a building of truly outstanding design quality to this vibrant and exciting part of the city centre. The location is ideally suited for student accommodation, being on the Oxford Road Corridor and within a few minutes’ walk of both university campuses.”

Alongside Turley and SimpsonHaugh, the project team includes DP Squared, Caldwell, OFR, Hann Tucker Associates, Gardiner and Theobald LLP, Curtins, Our Studio, GIA and E3P.

The application is expected to be considered at Planning Committee in March.
