Blended flexible working – how does it work at Turley?

Here at Turley, we operate a blended flexible working model. This gives our co-owners choice, freedom and flexibility as to where, when and how they work. But what does this look like in practice? We asked four co-owners to tell us how it works for them.

Alison Browne

Director of IT and Resources  /  Chair, Charitable Trust

“In 2021, I made the decision to reduce my working days to four per week so that I could return to education. I studied for an MSc in forensic psychological studies with the Open University. This was a new subject area for me and required hours of study and writing. I would not have been able to complete the workload had I been working fulltime. I graduated in December 2023.

Since then, I have spent most Fridays undertaking an ‘FLR’, or ‘Friday long run’, as my other new hobby is ultra running! My longest ultra so far has been 35 miles, and next year I intend to train for a 50-mile race.

I am extremely grateful to Turley for providing the opportunity to work flexibly. The additional time has enabled me to explore other interests and ambitions beyond my professional career.”

Marc Timlin

Director, Head of Heritage and Townscape

“Since February 2023, I have worked a 9-day fortnight, with every other Friday as my non-working day. Turley’s flexible working policy provides me with the time and space I need to support members of my family with complex health/care needs. I also find the occasional opportunity to visit National Trust properties (conforming to the heritage type) and enjoy the odd city break with my wife. The flexibility allows me to bring my best to work and balance my family commitments.”

Stephen Taylor

Director, Head of Placemaking

“I work a four-day week, with Friday as my non-working day. My Fridays generally involve walking my daughter to school, coffee with some of the parents, making pizza dough for Friday pizza, bike ride with friends, a swim (I train for triathlons) and making the pizza.”

Catherine Norris

Associate Director, Planning

“Turley’s flexible working policy sustained me in completing a four-year Master’s in Psychotherapy, awarded in 2025. I now use my non-working day to run a private psychotherapy practice alongside my role as a Town Planner at Turley – working a compressed week from Tuesday to Friday. The flexibility has been instrumental in supporting my work, studies and passions, enriching my life in and out of work.”

Whether it’s studying, caring commitments or even ultra running, we know that sometimes flexibility is needed. We encourage our co-owners to use the flexibilities on offer to balance personal, team and client requirements.
