We are seeking an exceptional Heritage specialist with strong local knowledge and a passion for place to drive our growth in London and the South. Our work is varied and includes residential developments, renewable energy schemes, sports stadia, tall buildings, town/city centre regeneration projects, and commercial development. This role will be based in our London office, with flexibility to work across projects nationally, as needed.
About the role
We are looking for a highly motivated, experienced and dedicated Heritage Director to join our Heritage, Townscape and Landscape team to drive our growth from our London office, and to lead on delivering exciting projects. In this role you will:
- Promote and deliver our heritage services, working closely with other heritage, landscape and townscape specialists and collaborating with wider Turley services.
- Provide strategic and commercially informed built heritage advice to clients on complex and high profile projects, underpinned by sound judgement and expert assessment.
- Deliver and effectively oversee the highest standard of heritage assessment and be proficient in preparing and reviewing assessments of significance and impact as well as Environmental Impact Assessment.
- Adept in positively engaging with statutory bodies and stakeholders, including conservation officers and Historic England.
- Prepare evidence for planning appeals and act as built heritage expert witness at Hearings and Public Inquiries.
- Contribute to the success of our service, as part of the leadership team, through work-winning, being a trusted advisor to clients, robust financial stewardship and proactively assisting with the development and wellbeing of our people.
- Be proactive in the marketplace, profile-raising and doing business development in your own way to find new work and retain clients.
- Take a proactive approach to developing others, including through effective delegation and line management.

Having experience in sustainability/NZI field would be a further advantage. Additionally, a relevant qualification and IHBC membership or membership of another relevant professional body would be preferred.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Landscape Planner to join a diverse and friendly team at a time when the team is continuing to grow, developing new fields of work, particularly geared around the significant new opportunities associated with housing delivery, Green Belt policy changes and Net Zero Infrastructure. We are involved in a diverse range of work, and valued by our clients for providing rigorous analysis and well-considered advice at key stages of the design and development process.
We often provide advice in the initial stages of a project, ensuring that landscape and townscape issues are considered from the outset and embedded in the design response. We work on some projects directly for clients and on others alongside other professional services in Turley. The preferred office locations for this role are Birmingham, Bristol, or London. However, in exceptional circumstances, we will also consider candidates based in other Turley office locations. In this role, you will work on a wide range of projects across the UK for prestigious private and public sector clients.
About the role
We are looking for a highly motivated, experienced and dedicated Consultant/Senior Consultant to join our team and help deliver a wide range of diverse and exciting projects. In this role you will:
- Work on varied projects including landscape and townscape appraisals and feasibility studies; development and design advice; urban/landscape design strategies to assist with planning applications, landscape, townscape and visual impact assessments; Green/grey Belt Appraisals; and, local plan representations.
- Undertake a supporting role within major projects or a lead role on smaller projects in conjunction with others and assist Directors and/or Associate Directors with the delivery of larger and more complex projects;
- Assist in the promotion and delivery of our landscape services, working closely with other townscape and heritage specialists in the team;
- Use your landscape knowledge to provide informed advice to clients to help shape development proposals and deliver exceptional place-making.
- Produce robust and well-considered Landscape and Townscape Statements and ES Chapters for a range of diverse development projects.
- Actively contribute to and progress with business development activities and client relationship management.
- There are also opportunities to work with the wider team and company strategies and initiatives aligned with personal interest including working with our heritage specialists and design and sustainability teams.
This is a full time role but candidates wishing to work part time will also be considered;

About you
- You will be an experienced landscape planner with technical skills in landscape analysis and a track record of delivering Landscape and Visual Appraisals / LVIAs and Green Belt assessments (experience in townscape assessment would also be useful but is not essential).
- You will ideally have consultancy experience, sound commercial and planning judgement and a desire to help shape high quality development is essential.
- You will be a Chartered Member of the Landscape Institute (CMLI) or currently registered on the pathway to chartership.
- You will be experienced in assessing landscapes and have a strong understanding of the English planning system, having demonstrable experience of applying the relevant legislation, national and local planning policy and guidance. landscapes.
- You will be able to proactively manage your own workload and deliver exceptional client service within a fast-paced consultancy environment.
- At Senior Consultant level you will have experience of profile raising and winning work, and of managing small to medium scale projects; alongside a greater role in financial stewardship. You possess excellent written and verbal communication skills and ideally, have knowledge of using Adobe InDesign and Illustrator. Experience of 3D city modelling programmes such as Vu.City (or similar) and GIS are desirable, but not essential.
